The Serval Cat also known as the tierboskat, is a wild "cat-o-nine-tail" found in Africa. It is the sole is part of the genus Leptailurus and was first is a description of German naturalist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in 1776. Eighteen subspecies are recognised. The serval is a slim, medium-sized "cat-o-nine-tail" that stands 54-62 cm( 21-24 in) at the shoulder and weighs 9-18 kg( 20-40 lb ). It is characterised by a small manager, big ears, a golden-yellow to buff coating spotted and striped with pitch-black, and a short, black-tipped tail. The serval has the longest legs of any feline relative to its figure size .
Active in the day as well as at night, servals tend to be solitary with minimal social interaction. Both sexes demonstrate highly overlapping dwelling ranges of 10 to 32 km2( 4-12 sq mi ), and mark them with feces and saliva. Servals are carnivores- they prey on rodents( especially vlei rats ), tiny birds, frogs, insects, and reptiles. The serval use its sense of hearing to pinpoint the target; to kill small-minded prey, it leaps over 2 m( 6 ft 7 in) above the field to land on the prey on its forefeet, and finally kills it with little bit on the cervix or the head. Mating takes place at different times of its first year in different parts of their range, but often once or twice a year in an area. After a gestational reporting period two to 3 month, a litter of one to four is digest. Weaning occurs at one month, and kittens embark hunting on their own at six months. The youths leave their father at 12 months .
The serval opts areas with treat such as reeds and tall grass and close proximity to water torsoes, such as wetlands and savannahs. It is rare in northern Africa and the Sahel, but widespread in southern Africa. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources( IUCN) categorizes the serval as least fear. It occurs in protection areas across its range, and hunting of servals is either vetoed or regulated in several countries .
