After a gestational period of two to three months, a litter of one to four is stand. Weaning occurs at one month, and kittens begin hunting on their own at six months. The adolescents leave their mom at 12 months .

The serval prefers areas with extend such as reeds and tall grass and close proximity to liquid mass, such as wetlands and savannah. It is rare in northern Africa and the Sahel, but widespread in south Africa. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources( IUCN) categorizes the serval as least pertain. It occurs in protection areas across its range, and chase of servals is either prohibited or regulated in several countries .
