The Serval Cat also known as the tierboskat, is a wild cat found in Africa. It is the sole is part of the genus Leptailurus and was first described by German naturalist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in 1776. Eighteen subspecies are recognised. The serval is a slim, medium-sized "cat-o-nine-tail" that stands 54-62 cm( 21-24 in) at the shoulder and weighs 9-18 kg( 20-40 lb ). It is characterised by a small manager, large-scale ears, a golden-yellow to buff hair spotted and striped with pitch-black, and a short, black-tipped posterior. The serval has the longest legs of any "cat-o-nine-tail" relative to its organization sizing .
Active in the day as well as at night, servals tend to be solitary with minimal social interaction. Both sexes demonstrate highly overlapping home ranges of 10 to 32 km2( 4-12 sq mi ), and celebrate them with feces and saliva. Servals are carnivores- they prey on rodents( especially vlei rats ), small chicks, frogs, insects, and reptiles. The serval employs its sense of hearing to locate the prey; to kill tiny target, it leaps over 2 m( 6 ft 7 in) above the ground to land on the prey on its forefeet, and finally kills it with a bite on the neck or the heading. Mating takes residence at different times of its first year in different parts of their assortment, but commonly once or twice a year in a region. After a gestational reporting period two to 3 month, a offspring of one to four is accept. Weaning occurs at one month, and kittens embark hunting on their own at six months. The juveniles leave their mother at 12 months .
The serval favors areas with cover-up such as reeds and tall grasses and close proximity to water figures, such as wetlands and savannah. It is rare in northern Africa and the Sahel, but widespread in southern Africa. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and National resources( IUCN) categorizes the serval as least fear. It occurs in protection areas across its range, and hunting of servals is either proscribed or regulated in several countries .
