The Serval Cat also known as the tierboskat, is a wild "cat-o-nine-tail" found in Africa. It is the sole is part of the genus Leptailurus and was first described by German naturalist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in 1776. Eighteen subspecies are recognised. Servals are carnivores- they prey on rodents( specially vlei rats ), small-minded birds, frogs, bugs, and reptiles. The serval uses its sense of hearing to locate the prey; to kill tiny prey, it leaps over 2 m( 6 ft 7 in) above the ground to land on the prey on its forefeet, and finally kills it with a bite on the cervix or the leader. Mating takes home at different times of its first year in different parts of their assortment, but normally once or twice a year in a region. After a gestational period of two to three months, a litter of one to four is birth. Weaning occurs at one month, and kittens embark hunting on their own at six months. The teenagers leave their mother at 12 months .

The serval prefers areas with treat such as reeds and towering grasses and close proximity to water bodies, such as wetlands and savannahs. It is rare in northern Africa and the Sahel, but widespread in south Africa. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and National resources( IUCN) classifies the serval as least fear. It occurs in protection areas across its range, and chase of servals is either proscribed or regulated in several countries .
