The Serval Cat also known as the tierboskat, is a wild "cat-o-nine-tail" found in Africa. It is the sole member of the genus Leptailurus and was first is a description of German naturalist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in 1776. Eighteen subspecies are recognised. The serval is a slim, medium-sized feline that stands 54-62 cm( 21-24 in) at the shoulder and weighs 9-18 kg( 20-40 lb ). Servals are carnivores- they prey on rodents( especially vlei rats ), small-scale birds, frogs, insects, and reptiles. The serval employs its sense of hearing to situate the target; to kill tiny prey, it leaps over 2 m( 6 ft 7 in) above the ground to land on the prey on its forefeet, and finally kills it with little bit on the cervix or the intelligence. Mating takes neighbourhood at different times of the year in different parts of their range, but generally once or twice a year in an area. After a gestational period of two to 3 month, a litter of one to four is digest. Weaning occurs at one month, and kittens embark hunting on their own at six months. The teenagers leave their mother at 12 months .
The serval favors areas with extend such as reeds and tall grass and proximity to ocean forms, such as wetlands and savannah. It is rare in northern Africa and the Sahel, but widespread in south Africa. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources( IUCN) classifies the serval as least headache. It occurs in protected areas across its assortment, and chase of servals is either proscribed or regulated in several countries .
