It is the sole is part of the genus Leptailurus and was first described by German naturalist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in 1776. Eighteen subspecies are recognised. The serval is a slender, medium-sized "cat-o-nine-tail" that stands 54-62 cm( 21-24 in) at the shoulder and weighs 9-18 kg( 20-40 lb ). It is characterised by a small manager, huge ears, a golden-yellow to buff coat spotted and striped with pitch-black, and a short, black-tipped posterior. The serval has the longest legs of any "cat-o-nine-tail" relative to its organization sizing .
Active in the working day as well as at night, servals tend to be solitary with minimal social interaction. Both sexes install highly overlapping residence ranges of 10 to 32 km2( 4-12 sq mi ), and differentiate them with feces and saliva. Servals are carnivores- they prey on rodents( specially vlei rats ), small-minded fowls, frogs, bugs, and reptiles. The serval employs its sense of hearing to pinpoint the target; to kill tiny target, it leaps over 2 m( 6 ft 7 in) above the sand to land on the prey on its forefeet, and finally kills it with a bite on the cervix or the heading. Mating takes residence at different times of its first year in different parts of their range, but often once or twice a year in an area. After a gestational reporting period two to three months, a litter of one to four is bear. Weaning occurs at one month, and kittens embark hunting on their own at six months. The adolescents leave their mom at 12 months .
The serval opts areas with spread such as reeds and towering grasses and close proximity to sea mass, such as wetlands and savannah. It is rare in northern Africa and the Sahel, but pervasive in southern Africa. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and National resources( IUCN) categorizes the serval as least headache. It occurs in protection areas across its range, and hunting of servals is either vetoed or regulated in several countries .
