After a gestational period of two to three months, a offspring of one to four is tolerate. Weaning occurs at one month, and kittens embark hunting on their own at six months. The minors leave their father at 12 months .

The serval opts areas with treat such as reeds and towering grasses and close proximity to sea bodies, such as wetlands and savannah. It is rare in northern Africa and the Sahel, but widespread in southern Africa.
