Servals are carnivores- they prey on rodents( particularly vlei rats ), small-scale birds, frogs, bugs, and reptiles. The serval applies its sense of hearing to situate the target; to kill small-time prey, it leaps over 2 m( 6 ft 7 in) above the floor to land on the prey on its forefeet, and finally kills it with a bite on the cervix or the psyche. Mating takes residence at different times of its first year in different parts of their range, but generally once or twice a year in a region. After a gestational period of two to three months, a litter of one to four is tolerate. Weaning occurs at one month, and kittens embark hunting on their own at six months. The youths leave their mother at 12 months .
The serval prefers areas with include such as reeds and towering grasses and proximity to liquid bodies, such as wetlands and savannah. It is rare in northern Africa and the Sahel, but pervasive in south Africa. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and National resources( IUCN) classifies the serval as least fear. It occurs in protected areas across its scope, and hunting of servals is either vetoed or regulated in several countries .
