Both sexes establish highly overlapping residence ranges of 10 to 32 km2( 4-12 sq mi ), and commemorate them with feces and saliva. Servals are carnivores- they prey on rodents( specially vlei rats ), small-minded birds, frogs, bugs, and reptiles. The serval uses its sense of hearing to locate the prey; to kill tiny target, it leaps over 2 m( 6 ft 7 in) above the sand to land on the prey on its forefeet, and finally kills it with a bite on the neck or the head. Mating takes residence at different times of its first year in different parts of their assortment, but typically once or twice a year in an area. After a gestational reporting period two to three months, a litter of one to four is digest. Weaning occurs at one month, and kittens begin hunting on their own at six months. The juveniles leave their mom at 12 months .
The serval favors areas with handle such as reeds and tall grass and proximity to sea forms, such as wetlands and savannah. It is rare in northern Africa and the Sahel, but pervasive in southern Africa. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources( IUCN) categorizes the serval as least anxiety. It occurs in protected areas across its scope, and hunting of servals is either prohibited or regulated in several countries .
