Active in the working day as well as at night, servals tend to be solitary with minimal social interaction. Both sexes establish highly overlapping dwelling ranges of 10 to 32 km2( 4-12 sq mi ), and commemorate them with feces and saliva. Servals are carnivores- they prey on rodents( specially vlei rats ), small-time fowls, frogs, bugs, and reptiles. The serval uses its sense of hearing to situate the prey; to kill small-time prey, it leaps over 2 m( 6 ft 7 in) above the soil to land on the prey on its forefeet, and finally kills it with little bit on the neck or the heading. Mating takes region at different times of its first year in different parts of their range, but generally once or twice a year in a region. After a gestational reporting period two to three months, a offspring of one to four is born. Weaning occurs at one month, and kittens begin hunting on their own at six months. The adolescents leave their father at 12 months .
The serval prefers areas with cover such as reeds and tall grass and proximity to sea forms, such as wetlands and savannah. It is rare in northern Africa and the Sahel, but pervasive in southern Africa. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and National resources( IUCN) classifies the serval as least refer. It occurs in protection areas across its scope, and chase of servals is either proscribed or regulated in several countries .
