The Serval Cat also known as the tierboskat, is a wild cat may be in Africa. It is the sole is part of the genus Leptailurus and was firstly described by German naturalist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in 1776. Eighteen subspecies are recognised. The serval is a slim, medium-sized "cat-o-nine-tail" that stands 54-62 cm( 21-24 in) at the shoulder and weighs 9-18 kg( 20-40 lb ). Active in the day as well as at night, servals tend to be solitary with minimal social interaction. Servals are carnivores- they prey on rodents( especially vlei rats ), small chicks, frogs, insects, and reptiles. The serval uses its sense of hearing to pinpoint the target; to kill small prey, it leaps over 2 m( 6 ft 7 in) above the sand to land on the prey on its forefeet, and finally kills it with little bit on the neck or the brain. Mating takes region at different times of its first year in different parts of their scope, but typically once or twice a year in a region. After a gestational reporting period two to 3 month, a offspring of one to four is born. Weaning occurs at one month, and kittens embark hunting on their own at six months. The teenagers leave their mom at 12 months .

The serval favors areas with plow such as reeds and towering grass and close proximity to sea bodies, such as wetlands and savannahs. It is rare in northern Africa and the Sahel, but pervasive in southern Africa. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and National resources( IUCN) categorizes the serval as least concern. It occurs in protected areas across its range, and chase of servals is either vetoed or regulated in several countries .
