The Serval Cat also known as the tierboskat, is a wild "cat-o-nine-tail" may be in Africa. It is the sole is part of the genus Leptailurus and was firstly described by German naturalist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in 1776. Eighteen subspecies are recognised. The serval is a slim, medium-sized cat that stands 54-62 cm( 21-24 in) at the shoulder and weighs 9-18 kg( 20-40 lb ). It is characterised by a small brain, big ears, a golden-yellow to buff coating spotted and striped with pitch-black, and a short, black-tipped tail. The serval has the longest legs of any feline relative to its form size .
Active in the working day as well as at night, servals tend to be solitary with minimal social interaction. Both sexes launch highly overlapping residence ranges of 10 to 32 km2( 4-12 sq mi ), and tag them with feces and saliva. Servals are carnivores- they prey on rodents( especially vlei rats ), tiny birds, frogs, insects, and reptiles. The serval applies its sense of hearing to locate the target; to kill small prey, it leaps over 2 m( 6 ft 7 in) above the floor to land on the prey on its forefeet, and finally kills it with a bite on the neck or the intelligence. Mating takes residence at different times of its first year in different parts of their scope, but normally once or twice a year in an area. After a gestational reporting period two to 3 month, a offspring of one to four is birth. Weaning occurs at one month, and kittens embark hunting on their own at six months. The adolescents leave their mom at 12 months .
The serval prefers areas with covering such as reeds and towering grasses and proximity to ocean figures, such as wetlands and savannah. It is rare in northern Africa and the Sahel, but pervasive in south Africa. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and National resources( IUCN) classifies the serval as least fear. It occurs in protection areas across its assortment, and hunting of servals is either prohibited or regulated in several countries .
