Servals are carnivores- they prey on rodents( specially vlei rats ), tiny chicks, frogs, insects, and reptiles. The serval expends its sense of hearing to locate the target; to kill small-scale target, it leaps over 2 m( 6 ft 7 in) above the sand to land on the prey on its forefeet, and finally kills it with little bit on the cervix or the thought. Mating takes home at different times of its first year in different parts of their assortment, but often once or twice a year in an area. After a gestational reporting period two to three months, a litter of one to four is abide. Weaning occurs at one month, and kittens begin hunting on their own at six months. The juveniles leave their father at 12 months .

It is rare in northern Africa and the Sahel, but widespread in south Africa.
