Servals are carnivores- they prey on rodents( specially vlei rats ), small-time chicks, frogs, bugs, and reptiles. The serval expends its sense of hearing to pinpoint the prey; to kill small-time target, it leaps over 2 m( 6 ft 7 in) above the ground to land on the prey on its forefeet, and finally kills it with a bite on the cervix or the head. Mating takes region at different times of its first year in different parts of their range, but often once or twice a year in an area. After a gestational period of two to three months, a offspring of one to four is carry. Weaning occurs at one month, and kittens embark hunting on their own at six months. The adolescents leave their mom at 12 months .

The serval prefers areas with cover-up such as reeds and towering grass and close proximity to sea bodies, such as wetlands and savannahs. It is rare in northern Africa and the Sahel, but widespread in southern Africa. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources( IUCN) classifies the serval as least anxiety. It occurs in protection areas across its range, and chase of servals is either vetoed or regulated in several countries .
