After a gestational period of two to three months, a litter of one to four is birth. Weaning occurs at one month, and kittens embark hunting on their own at six months. The youths leave their father at 12 months .

The serval favors areas with covering such as reeds and tall grass and proximity to liquid torsoes, such as wetlands and savannah. It is rare in northern Africa and the Sahel, but pervasive in south Africa. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources( IUCN) classifies the serval as least anxiety. It occurs in protected areas across its range, and chase of servals is either prohibited or regulated in several countries .
