The Serval Cat also known as the tierboskat, is a wild "cat-o-nine-tail" found in Africa. It is the sole member of the genus Leptailurus and was first described by German naturalist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in 1776. Eighteen subspecies are recognised. The serval is a slim, medium-sized cat that stands 54-62 cm( 21-24 in) at the shoulder and weighs 9-18 kg( 20-40 lb ). Servals are carnivores- they prey on rodents( specially vlei rats ), small-time birds, frogs, insects, and reptiles. The serval expends its sense of hearing to locate the target; to kill small-time target, it leaps over 2 m( 6 ft 7 in) above the floor to land on the prey on its forefeet, and finally kills it with a bite on the cervix or the brain. Mating takes home at different times of its first year in different parts of their range, but typically once or twice a year in a region. After a gestational reporting period two to 3 month, a litter of one to four is endure. Weaning occurs at one month, and kittens begin hunting on their own at six months. The minors leave their father at 12 months .
The serval wishes areas with plow such as reeds and towering grass and proximity to water forms, such as wetlands and savannahs. It is rare in northern Africa and the Sahel, but widespread in southern Africa. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources( IUCN) classifies the serval as least relate.
