The Serval Cat also known as the tierboskat, is a wild cat may be in Africa. It is the sole member of the genus Leptailurus and was first is a description of German naturalist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in 1776. Eighteen subspecies are recognised. Servals are carnivores- they prey on rodents( particularly vlei rats ), tiny fowls, frogs, insects, and reptiles. The serval utilizes its sense of hearing to situate the target; to kill small target, it leaps over 2 m( 6 ft 7 in) above the sand to land on the prey on its forefeet, and finally kills it with a bite on the cervix or the leader. Mating takes neighbourhood at different times of the year in different parts of their range, but often once or twice a year in an area. After a gestational period of two to 3 month, a litter of one to four is carry. Weaning occurs at one month, and kittens embark hunting on their own at six months. The adolescents leave their mom at 12 months .
The serval opts areas with plow such as reeds and towering grasses and close proximity to ocean torsoes, such as wetlands and savannahs. It is rare in northern Africa and the Sahel, but widespread in south Africa. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources( IUCN) classifies the serval as least pertain. It occurs in protection areas across its scope, and chase of servals is either vetoed or regulated in several countries .
